Fibre Arts in Ottawa this Spring

Oh Oh!! This will be a busy and fun Spring with many artistic activities.  It feels like everyone is waking up from a long dark and cold period, a bit like daffodils shots coming through warmer soil near my house foundation , or in full sun.

 Soon will be the fifth annual Out-of-The-Box Fibre Fling Show and Sale.  It will be on April 8th and 9th, 2016. You have seen nothing like it!
Regional Fibre artists  work very hard and have lots of fun too , setting up this two-day show and sale of ALL kinds of arts based on textile.  The group is creative and versatile and everyone seems to enjoy every minute of their time doing and sharing textile art.  We have monthly get-together and every  time, I come out of there in great spirit.
I am going to have a few items for sale, like felted soaps, and a framed mixed media print on paper called Unravelling Stitched Chaos,  and for show, my 'sweater book with long A-Z tentacles (see a post last Fall).

Currently a small exhibition of fibre arts by OOTB artist is taking place at the store Wabi-Sabi on Wellington st. in Ottawa.

This Monday we had a presentation by an amazing fibre artist, Bozica Radjenovic, who creates wool sculptures.  Ah...this was so magical how knitted wool pieces could become 3D objects.    Bozica was so good to explain her intention in making a piece, and how it relates to her life experience.  I was really moved by how beauty can emerge from adversity and pain.

Aujourd'hui je me suis mise à faire quelques cartes de remerciements.
Ca fait quelque temps que je veux en faire et en avoir plusieurs de prêtes quand je partage de la correspondance avec des collègues de calligraphie. Habituellement je suis trop pressée pour m'installer et les faire au besoin.  Alors là j'en aurai au moins quelques-unes. J'ai utilisé un pinceau plat et de la gouache, et j'ai voulu que l'enveloppe soit aussi marquée par des taches.

je veux aussi en faire en anglais et avec le graphite soluble que j'ai découvert dans l'atelier de la talentueuse et chaleureuse calligraphe américaine Amity Parks la semaine dernière.

Today I started doing a bit of calligraphy for some Thank You cards.  i usually do not have time to set up and make such cards in the immediate moment when i need them, and when i try, it is a disaster-  I do not well in calligraphy the pressed by time.  So I made a half-dozen and this allowed me to practice a bit. i have other ideas for more cards, this time with an english Thank You message, using the water-soluble graphite pencils that i got introduced to last week during a great two-day workshop with the talented and friendly US calligrapher Amity Parks.

 Les contraires s'attirent- Opposites Attract

Le  Canadian Bookbinders and Book Art Guild of Ottawa Valley a organisé un échange de feuillets créés par ses membres sur le thème Les contraires s'attirent.  Nous sommes 15 à participer et nous recevrons donc 15 feuillets différents que nous relierons par la suite à notre guise.  Cette semaine nous avons franchi l'étape de compléter nos feuillets et de les distribuer  aux autres participants. Un beau moment qui a permis chacun et chacune de décrire son intention et les matériaux et  techniques déployés.

Pour ma part j'ai conçu mon feuillet en cherchant à opposer et attirer le blanc/noir, la symétrie /l'irrégularité, le plein/le vide, l'intérieur/l'extérieur, la droite/la courbe, la douceur/la rugosité, la droite/la gauche, l'un/l'autre.  Voici quelques photos de mon parcours.  Tout le découpage a été fait à la main.

En mai, nous présenterons nos reliures respectives pour les 15 feuillets. J'ai ma petite idée sur ce que je veux faire!

Notre visite à Baie-Comeau Cote-Nord Québec

A la fin février nous sommes allés visiter notre fils qui travaille comme brasseur à la micro-brasserie de Baie-Comeau.  Ca nous a pris 14 heures de transport en commun-train et autobus- pour nous y rendre.
Il y a une galerie d'art qui était ouverte et on est allé voir. l'exposition s'intitule Singulier-Pluriel par Richard Ferron.  Cette nouvelle galerie qui venait tout juste d'ouvrir ses portes avait permis de déplacer l'exposition de M. Ferron de Sept-iles à Baie-Comeau. Quel bonheur ce fût que de rencontrer Richard et de vivre l'expérience artistique et sensorielle à laquelle il nous convie. Richard a fabriqué une beau petit pupitre en bois, en pièces détachées qui le rend facilement déplacable, et deux chaises.  On s'y assoit en face de lui.  On reçoit une feuille de papier et un crayon marqueur permanent noir.   Richard nous invite à dessiner son visage à l'aveugle.  Notre feuille de papier est glissée en-dessous du comptoir du pupitre, et on ne voit pas du tout ce que l'on dessine.  Il fera de même avec notre visage.  C'est  intense l'attention qu'on porte à  l'observation de l'autre et la notion d'espace sur le papier qu'on ne voit pas. Ensuite c'est la révélation!  On s'offre mutuellement en cadeau nos dessins.

Richard s'est déplacé pendant des mois sur la Cote-Nord pour faire cet échange avec des centaines de participants.  Son exposition présente les dessins de lui-même représenté par tous ces participants, ainsi que plusieurs de ceux qu'il a fait de 'l'autre en face de lui'.  C'est vraiment fascinant de voir comment chacun a procédé, et ce que ça a donné. Les travaux des enfants sont sans détour, alors que des participants ont choisi l'imaginaire (un bonhomme allumette par exemple!). Vraiment magique et surprenant!

Voici la représentation que Richard a fait de moi et de Stephen.  J'y ajoute aussi le carton de son exposition. Merci Richard d'avoir ajouter un beau moment de réflexion artistique dans notre séjour  à Baie-Comeau! Le plaisir de la rencontre impromptue était au rendez-vous!

Tricote cote cote Knit Knit Knit!!

There is sign of Spring, but somehow this year i found that this winter was short, and I am happy to keep knitting and knitting. This is an activity I  am not attracted to  in warmer months.  I actually got the bug recently when I was struggling with a needlepoint project i had abandoned 20 years ago, half done.  I decided to complete the needle point.  There were challenges, like many missing colours of wool (what happened to it?). a wonderful lady in a local wool shop changed my frustration around and helped me find a good enough colour match for about four missing wool bundles.  Her gentleness made a big difference in my outlook for this project:  with a bit of patience and forgiveness, I could do it! So I got going,  and again got a bit frustrated with all the little bits and spots that were not done in the needlepoint project... three stitches of this, and then one stitch of that.  I was working on that project at the end of the day, and there was not very good lighting.  One morning  I decided to  move a chair around and placed it near a south window, I also used my most recent prescription reading glasses , and position myself so that there  would be no strong shadows over the work.  That did it!!!  It was enjoyable and so zen.  It made me at peace and relaxed.  so i kept going, early every morning to work on the needlepoint project.  now it is done and I am delighted!  It is not easy to get back into unfinished business, but...quelle satisfaction!!! Now I am stretching the canvas, which is out of square, and I am thinking of a frame for it.

So getting back to knitting...  I wanted to get that feeling of peace and zen again for an hour every morning, and this knitting project has this effect on me! Sometimes, I put the Netflix fireplace on the TV, and I get lost in my thoughts. I could do it with my eyes closed.

it is very simple: Knit stitch all the time.  I love Knit stitch- point mousse en français-  it give such a soft and spongy texture to a knitting project.  There will be stripes of different colours and different height. This will be large throw for our sofa.. .for next Fall- only 6 months away!

It will be about 1,5 m wide.  i am using Cascade Yarns Eco + 100% Peruvian Highland wool.
