Monotype

Homme I Monotype

My intent is to bring a humorous look at domestic cats and our relation with them. Memories of begging my parents, and me, as parent, being constantly asked about adopting a kitten, shaped the 'scenario' for this tryptique. Later on, Steinlen's 'Chat noir' brought cats and art in our home. With a rotary tool to engrave plexiglas, I created a texture of sketchy images, like childhood memories.

I. Je veux un chat

II. Un ti-minou à moi

III. Merci M. Steinlen

I completed a series of prints yesterday using drypoint on acrylic sheet technique  at the Print studio of the Ottawa School of Art Print studio.  I love the shape of leaves of the Ginkgo tree and the title for the piece came easily- the Waltz of the Ginkgo. Things were going very well.

Bonne visite!

Polyester Lithography

This summer I took a 5-day workshop on polyester lithography.
'Flooded Britania", one print I managed to complete during the workshop

Lithography is a planographic printmaking process- everything is taking place on a flat surface without higher or lower inking planes.  Lithography is based on the fact that water and oil repel and that ink will be attracted by oily surfaces.  So on a piece of limestone, the artist uses a greasy drawing medium to create an image , and the stone is kept damp while the ink is rolled onto the stone.  A special press needs to be used, a lithography press which accommodate the stone slab ( about 100 mm thick). This seems simple but in fact several chemical process take place to prepare the stone (it is reusable ). That is almost all I know of stone lithography, besides the fact that it is considered the printmaking technique closest to painting as the artist literally draws or paints on the image.
This Spring, polyester lithography was the big buzz in town and a class was offered at the School of Art in August.  i had heard that it was simpler and relatively inexpensive and one did not need dedicated printmaking equipment; one can use Sharpie markers, China markers, india ink, ballpoint pens, acrylic paint, toner solution  to create an image on a special film of polyester, and with some prep with gum arabic solution, and with a solution of water and civic acid for dampening the plate, one could print with an etching press or even by hand  with a barren or a wooden spoon.

That is basically what we explored during that workshop,  the  kind of image we get with different writing mediums, how durable is the plate prepared with different medium for multiple prints, whether  heating the plate make a difference, what about the viscosity of the ink, and the type of paper, and dampening the paper, how to make a multiple color image & registration, and how to separate colours of a digital image using Photoshop  and get multiple plates of their primary colours.

In the workshop, after a day, a day and a half of playing around  and  trying everything  and figuring out the steps, i calmed down and decided to limit myself to two images and try them with different drawing mediums and papers to understand how everything responded.  it started to get better for me when I figured out a plan of action.

The print above was done with two plates.  Most of the image was drawn with sharpie markers and china markers and the water and clouds were done with  touch, a toner solution applied with a brush.  i had tried create the water with acrylic paint and i found that it create a solid opaque value, which was not what i was looking for.  Toner solution has more dispersed particulates and this created different values.

The print below was my first  attempt at that two-plate image on good paper.  I used china markers for tree shapes and birds and grass, and brushed-on acrylic paint for the blue areas, and damp BFK Rives paper.  The very absorptive paper seemed to have evened out  the brush strokes of the acrylic paint (on newsprint, these showed) , which was disappointing. I chose to start over with a new set of plates, and this time, i heated the plates on a hot plate at about 200-220F.  This seemed to reduce peeling of the image.  I was looking for  a more painterly look for the pond and for that, I switched from acrylic paint to Touch ( toner solution), and it did create more texture (See the print on top).
After a few trial on newsprints,  I tried with good paper and it created a different feel.  Also the image on the plate was starting to fade or peel off, so few 'good' prints would be possible.  I found that heating these plates made the image on the plate more durable.

Losing My Marbles over Making Marbled Paper

Marbled papers- wow this is so much fun!

In May I took a one-day workshop on European marbling at the Ottawa School of Art.  soo much fun...
Everything was ready for us... the mordanted paper, the carrageenan bath, the acrylic paint,  the combs, the whips, all at our individual station!  Ah...  le bonheur.

Nancy F., our instructor and accomplished papermaker and marbler, intertwined demonstration and creation time  with a given technique very well.  All seven of us were working franticly,   creating all kinds of patterns and color combinations.  It was amazing to see everyone's paper in the drying racks.  We each ended up with over 20 great prints.

Looking forward to another session with Nancy in the Fall!

It will be so cool to use these in my handmade books and cards.

I am thinking of using these to make my first chinese thread book.

This is a great pleasure to invite you to my solo exhibition of prints

“Random Explorations” by Madeleine Rousseau

Madeleine Rousseau presents prints depicting seemingly random subjects, but linked together by her journey of exploration of several printmaking techniques since she started printmaking three years ago.   Thirteen prints based on  linocut, wood engraving, collograph, drypoint, ecoprinting, suminagashi marbling  and letterpress techniques make this exhibition.

Eco Printing on paper

Drying eco-prints on the clothes line
I took a  workshop on ecoprinting in June 2015, with master ecoprinter Wendy Feldberg in Ottawa, organized by the Out-of-the-Box fibre artists in Ottawa. I learned a lot and had so much fun discovering to things turned out.Wendy has a great blog where her ecoprinting experiments and experience are well documented.  The summer was coming to a close in September and I realized that this month would probably be one last opportunity to harvest my garden and to work outside to ecoprint.  So i got the great notes of the workshop out and started.

Basic lasagna technique. The ecoprinting technique I used is what I will call the 'lasagna' method!  It consists of  layering  plant material and/or ferreous metals between sheets of paper, resulting in a bundle of sheet of papers separated by pigment-based material.  Then the bundle is compressed by some weights (I used old bricks) to ensure contact between paper and plants, and then is  exposed to steam for a couple of hours. With this method each sheet of paper will be printed on both sides, and each side can have a very different print, rather than a mirror image.

Preparation. I wanted to print on paper (rather than fabric), so I choose Fabriano watercolour paper 140 lbs.  90 lbs paper is okay but more fragile. The paper was soaked in a solution of alum for 12 hours.  The alum will given some  mordant to the paper, so the vegetal pigment can bind to the paper better.

Set up to steam the paper/vegetal material lasagna

Plants. I used hibiscus flowers, rose leaves, ferns, coleoptis leaves and flowers, yellow and red onion skins, geranium leaves, used ground coffee, black tea mixes, sumac leaves, flowers of  nasturtium,  leave of iris, leftover grape pulp (after making jelly) and  flowers of black eye susan flower and  some of the walnut husks leftover from previous project (see blog post on making walnut ink).  I also tried algae ( dry) and some tree seed pods. Wendy told us about ferrous objects creating interesting  prints and affecting the colour of the pigments from plants, so I added a cheese grater, nails and  other rusting metals.

Here are some of the prints, along with the pigmented material arrangement.
Fig. 1a Some onion skins, sumac leave, hibiscus petal, coffee grounds, grape pulp
and a piece of rusting iron are deposited on the paper

Fig 1d) This is the ecoprint on the sheet of paper  placed on top of the plant material in Fig. 1a. Sumac print is shadowed; onion skin, iron and hibiscus flower petal and grape pulp  are  strong.
Grape pulp might produce  a fugitive print, meaning it will fade over time.
Onion skins responded very well (Fig. 2).
Fig. 2 Close up of onion skin on the damp paper after steaming for a few hours
Hibiscus flower petal made a great print in a surprising tint (Fig. 3).
Fig 3a) Hibiscus flower petal

Rusting metal made a strong statement.
Fig. 4a) Rusting iron cheese grater is included

Fig 4c) Dry print of the cheese grater on bottom sheet

Fig 4d) Dry print on the top sheet

Fig 4e) Dry print on the other side of sheet in Fig 4d).  in other words, the mark made by the rusted cheese grater went through the paper and registered on the other side too.

Fig 5 Bricks were installed on top of the 'lasagna' during the steaming.
The bundle was turned over mid-way in the steaming process
to expose the top layer to more steam

Printed papers were rinsed to remove vegetal matters, and then hung to  drip. Later when almost dry, the sheets were layered and placed under some weight to flatten.
