Expo vente à Stittsville On

Tout le mois de décembre, le regroupement d'artistes de la fibre Out-of-the-box tient une exposition à la bibliothèque municipale de Stittsville en Ontario (environ 35 min. d'auto du centre d'Ottawa. J'en fais partie et j'y participe.
Le thème est le suivant:   Une expression favorite.
J'ai choisi l'expression On n'est pas sorti du bois.   Cette expression est utilisée quand on a encore beaucoup de travail à faire pour arriver à compléter un projet. Ça tombait bien car je venais de faire une peinture à l'huile d'un boisé à l'automne, dans mon cours avec Tricia Savoie à l'école d'art d'Ottawa-Orléans.  La peinture avait beaucoup de défauts mais j'en aimais une partie.  Alors je suis partie avec cela comme base pour développer mon oeuvre en laine feutrée pour l'expo de Stittsville.

La peinture dont je n'aimais vraiment pas la partie à gauche.  

Ca démontre que rien n'est jamais perdu.   Tout finit par servir.

Mon pays l'hiver

This all started with this project to do a calligraphy with the Mon pays song by Gilles Vigneault in June.  The meandering book shown in a previous post came out of this challenge.  But to get there, i tried different things, and one of them was to write using felting wool.  As I  have a collection of wool sweaters bought in second hand shops, the idea of winter, sweaters, and 'tuques' grew, and I could see in my head which seater i wanted for the background.  This sweater reminded me of old winter sweaters that one sees in kids story books, like the ones by Robert Munch, and the colours and patterns were perfect for that vintage look.

 I did a first time similar project with the needle felted tree on a felted sweater a few months back ( another recent post) , and enjoyed it.
When time came to get a frame, I looked into my stash of white, black and natural wood frames, and nothing seemed to work.   Then S suggested I look into my stash of old window frames I pick up on the street on garbage day, and is piled up against the foundation wall of the house.  I jumped with enthusiasm about finally using one of those. ( I kept them for stained glass projects).  one of them was the perfect size. It had been exposed to a winter outside, and the zillions coats of green paint peeled off very easily.  I started to take care of it,  sand it, let it dry in the sun (the end grain  wood was so absorptive)- labour of love. I finish it with white chalk paint & clear wax , to keep with the wintery feel.

I believe the window frame is the bottom sash of a vertical slider window.  The sash measures 16 in by 24 in. A vertical slider window would be about 16 in. by 46 in.  In our neighbourhood, this size of window was used in bathrooms.

Note the recess in the wood on each side (jamb) and at the sill;  this was probably to line up with the trim that extended to the lath and plaster finish (walls were quite thick then- around the beginning of the 20th century).  This kind of woodwork detailing is not common in todays construction.
I love the fact that the brass handle was still in place. Yap, I love it!

Alors voilà, j'ai continué à découvrir la laine feutrée à l'aiguille avec un autre ti-kit de Wendo, que j'avais achetée il y a au moins un an.  je l'ai fait  et quand je l'ai eu fini, je voulais que le motif aille plus loin que le feutre bleu original du kit.  Ca m'a pris un peu de temps pour 'voir' ce qu'il fallait faire.  J'ai fouillé dans tous les chandails usagés de ma collection et finalement j'ai choisi celui ci qui a un dégradé de couleur. J'ai fait 'débordé l'arbre sur ce chandail, toujours avec le feutrage à l'aiguille.  

J'aime beaucoup que les côtes du chandail fasse partie du tout. Cela donne une texture intéressante à l'ensemble.  I really like that the ribs of the sweater are part of the whole; it gives an interesting texture to the image.

Une copine artiste de la fibre très inspirante Suzanne C-R. avait raconté le mois précédent qu'on peut commander de timbres poste personnalisés, simplement avec une image .jpeg. et elle nous avait montré ses timbres d'une de ses oeuvres pour l'année du coq. Ce sont de vrais timbres poste qu'on peut utiliser pour affranchir des lettres.

Laine feutrée à l'aiguille/Needle felting

Beaucoup de choses intéressantes et artistiques se sont passées depuis novembre 2016, date de ma dernière entrée sur mon blog. Pourtant je m'assois pour la première fois cette année pour documenter et partager mon parcours de ces derniers 6 mois. Comme une marmotte qui sort de son trou au printemps?
Je dirais que ma plus récente nouvelle découverte se rapporte à la laine feutrée.  Je collectionne les vieux chandails de laine pour les transformer en d'autres objets, et cette fois j'ai exploré les possibilités de la laine feutrée.  J'ai commencé avec l'achat d'un jeu de laine d'une vingtaine de couleurs et une aiguille et un matelas de base, lors d'une visite à Almonte  en Ontario en décembre; on y trouve des boutiques cool et le Musée du textile de la vallée du Mississippi. En janvier quand le calme est revenu après les Fêtes, j'ai envahi la table de la salle à manger (on y mange si peu souvent-c'est plutôt un atelier) pour m'essayer, avec un motif géométrique régulier de cercles pour lequel je me suis fait un gabarit, m'inspirant de ce que la boutique d'Almonte montrait comme exemples de projets pour leur kit de laine.  

J'aime beaucoup travailler la laine feutrée. On arrête, on reprend, pas de maille, de patron, c'est très spontané! Je peux imaginer pourquoi on peut vouloir teindre sa laine soi-même, afin d'avoir plus de possibilités de couleur. J'ai hâte au Twist, festival de la fibre de Saint-André Avellin Qc en août pour trouver de nouvelles teintes! 

My first needle felting piece! The size is about 25 cm by 25 cm, and it fits well into an IKEA frame, without the glass.  It is really relaxing to do needle felting.  My spouse got used to hear the crouch crouch crouch of the needle sinking into the wool.  On a wall the piece creates a cheerful punch of colour, a quite modern and simple look.

I did a second one with different colours and tried a white frame, just to see...

Third piece! I had this small black frame, and made a felted piece on this orange  background wool  felt I bought in Perth.  I love orange... I painted my bedroom walls orange when I was a teenager, with a single brush- we did not know about paint rollers then I guess...

Members of Out-of-the-Box Fibre Artists are invited to  wear a name tag they made,  at meetings etc, and I made a new one for myself.  The fabric is the background is Japanese cotton I bought in Tokyo in October 2016.  Arigato!

Fibre Arts in Ottawa this Spring

Oh Oh!! This will be a busy and fun Spring with many artistic activities.  It feels like everyone is waking up from a long dark and cold period, a bit like daffodils shots coming through warmer soil near my house foundation , or in full sun.

 Soon will be the fifth annual Out-of-The-Box Fibre Fling Show and Sale.  It will be on April 8th and 9th, 2016. You have seen nothing like it!
Regional Fibre artists  work very hard and have lots of fun too , setting up this two-day show and sale of ALL kinds of arts based on textile.  The group is creative and versatile and everyone seems to enjoy every minute of their time doing and sharing textile art.  We have monthly get-together and every  time, I come out of there in great spirit.
I am going to have a few items for sale, like felted soaps, and a framed mixed media print on paper called Unravelling Stitched Chaos,  and for show, my 'sweater book with long A-Z tentacles (see a post last Fall).

Currently a small exhibition of fibre arts by OOTB artist is taking place at the store Wabi-Sabi on Wellington st. in Ottawa.

This Monday we had a presentation by an amazing fibre artist, Bozica Radjenovic, who creates wool sculptures.  Ah...this was so magical how knitted wool pieces could become 3D objects.    Bozica was so good to explain her intention in making a piece, and how it relates to her life experience.  I was really moved by how beauty can emerge from adversity and pain.

There is sign of Spring, but somehow this year i found that this winter was short, and I am happy to keep knitting and knitting. This is an activity I  am not attracted to  in warmer months.  I actually got the bug recently when I was struggling with a needlepoint project i had abandoned 20 years ago, half done.  I decided to complete the needle point.  There were challenges, like many missing colours of wool (what happened to it?). a wonderful lady in a local wool shop changed my frustration around and helped me find a good enough colour match for about four missing wool bundles.  Her gentleness made a big difference in my outlook for this project:  with a bit of patience and forgiveness, I could do it! So I got going,  and again got a bit frustrated with all the little bits and spots that were not done in the needlepoint project... three stitches of this, and then one stitch of that.  I was working on that project at the end of the day, and there was not very good lighting.  One morning  I decided to  move a chair around and placed it near a south window, I also used my most recent prescription reading glasses , and position myself so that there  would be no strong shadows over the work.  That did it!!!  It was enjoyable and so zen.  It made me at peace and relaxed.  so i kept going, early every morning to work on the needlepoint project.  now it is done and I am delighted!  It is not easy to get back into unfinished business, but...quelle satisfaction!!! Now I am stretching the canvas, which is out of square, and I am thinking of a frame for it.

So getting back to knitting...  I wanted to get that feeling of peace and zen again for an hour every morning, and this knitting project has this effect on me! Sometimes, I put the Netflix fireplace on the TV, and I get lost in my thoughts. I could do it with my eyes closed.

it is very simple: Knit stitch all the time.  I love Knit stitch- point mousse en français-  it give such a soft and spongy texture to a knitting project.  There will be stripes of different colours and different height. This will be large throw for our sofa.. .for next Fall- only 6 months away!

It will be about 1,5 m wide.  i am using Cascade Yarns Eco + 100% Peruvian Highland wool.

J'ai découvert cette forme d'artisanat quand je suis allée au Festival de la fibre de Saint-André Avellin en aout 2014.  Wabi-Sabi vendait des kits  de laine pour faire des savons feutrés, avec les instructions.  J'ai essayé. J'ai aimé. C'est très facile à faire, décoratif et utilitaire au quotidien.  Ça fait aussi de mignons cadeaux. 
Le savon feutré bien imbibé d'eau fait une belle mousse et la laine nettoie bien.  J'aime l'utiliser particulièrement en été quand on est plus crotté après une journée dehors. Des fois, j'ai remarqué qu'il arrive que la teinture de certaines  laines déteint et la mousse du savon devient colorée...  
Je ne fais pas moi-même les savons (en tout cas pas pour tout de suite), et je les achète dans une savonnerie artisanale locale; j'ai remarqué  que les savons faits à la main  durent beaucoup plus longtemps que les autres (mais un peu plus cher à l'achat); ils sont aussi disponibles en une belle variété de parfums. 

J'ai aussi entrainé S dans mon projet en sollicitant ses talents de travailleur du bois pour fabriquer des porte-savon.  En effet ces beaux savons dureront plus longtemps s'ils ont une chance de sécher entre les usages, et un porte-savon avec rainures est utile pour ça.  

On dit même que la pochette de laine peut être utilisée pour y mettre des bébelles quand le savon est fini.  Rien ne se perd. Il s'agit simplement de tailler une fente dans le haut de la pochette.

J'en ai vendu quelques-uns dans des foires du temps des Fêtes.  Je pense à en mettre en vente dans l'expo-vente Fibre Fling du Out-of-the-box Fibre Artists Association  qui se tiendra le 8-9 avril 2016 à Ottawa.

Les savons feutrés sont en train de sécher près d'une sortie d'air chaud.

Ces chandails de laine récupérés dans les friperies prennent beaucoup d'espace de rangement et il s'agit d'un rituel assez long pour moi que de tous les sortir, les aligner sur le plancher  et les imaginer dans leur prochaine vie potentielle.  je peux passer beaucoup de temps à les examiner, les tâter, les agencer et les mettre de coté pour autre chose que le projet initial.  C'est comme quand je jouais à la poupée...

Repurposed Sweaters

here is last night project:  converting a felted 100%wool sweater into a cushion.  I like to maintain  some authenticity to the original piece of textile, so it still looks like a sweater.  The buttons, the shape, the borders I maintain, and even emphasize.

I wonder what I will do with the sleeves...maybe leg warmers!
